The term 'Jump the Shark' originated from a stunt in episode "Hollywood, Part Three of Three", where Fonzie is on water skies literally trying to jump over a shark. Basically, it's meaning is when a series has reached it's peak but the creator still wants it to live on and what further ensues is an inevitable decline in quality (either it be in storytelling, characterization, aesthetics etc.). Likewise, they introduce a new gimmick as an attempt to keep the audience interested. Personally, I think it jumped the shark initially with the Artificial Human Saga (despite it and the Imperfect Cell portion of the Cell Saga being my favorite points in DBZ) and it becomes pretty obvious by the Majin Boo Saga (or somewhere around it). Don't get my wrong, I like the Artificial Humans a lot (especially 18) and I thought Cell in himself was a really well thought out (and original) villain but I find the idea that a whack-o scientist somehow being able to create a bunch of Artificial beings that are stronger than Freeza (the root of everything that happened to Goku) to be silly and improbable. Not to mention the dragonballs were no longer a major part of the narrative but a minor plot convenience, and it's also where the Saiyans started to overshadow the rest of the cast. As for the Majin Boo Saga, while not terrible, there's a long list of stuff from it that I call BS on and the most infamous one would have to be Super Saiyan being reduced to mere child's plaything. Also, the Majin Boo Saga has nothing to with any of the previously-established story arcs despite being the last one. The question is, do you think Dragon Ball ever 'Jumped the Shark' or not? If so then tell at what point? Edited by DBZAOTA482, Jan 20 2013, 05:11 PM.

I think it jumped the shark after Android 19/20 were discarded and replaced with three more androids, and then this was replaced with Cell. I honestly think if they kept on going with 19 and 20, it would have been much more interesting. |

Honestly no. I think if they had gone on to make one more Saga then that would have happened. |

The Buu saga, no doubt about it. You can even pinpoint the moment DBZ jumped the shark: When Goten and Trunks became Super Saiyans. I feel like it kind of jumped the shark with the SSJ madness in the Cell saga, but at least then it made sense. Goku and Vegeta are obvious candidates for SSJ, Trunks was a badass from the future, and Gohan going SSJ was bellieveable because he was always shown to have the most potential. As ridiculous as the Cell saga was at times, it finished on a very final note. Goku died and the torch was passed to Gohan. A very complete and fitting ending. I think we're lucky for what we got based on AT's original plan of making 19 and 20 the main villains. That would have been incredibly lame. |

Beginning of Buu Saga. I'm sure many would know why coming from me.. *coughGohancough* but I was really annoyed with the fact Goten could go super saiyan with such ease. Same with Trunks.. And Gohan was so focused on school he didn't even make time to train or anything... I mean that's great, but.. I'd still make time to train to protect the earth from danger 'n.. yeah. I thought Gohan was gonna take over as like protecting earth, but that was proven negative. I still read/watched through it with my disappointments, but I found it kind of.. neh. I don't like it but I don't bash anyone who does. And to me, it seems Goten wasn't pushed enough in school. I think Chi-Chi didn't want to end up with another Gohan or something... getting him books for gifts (which pisses me off, by the way. No childhood except like studying larvae and stuff.. ;n; I have issues) and that's possibly why he just wants girls in GT?.. |

I believe it's implied that Goku's second (and permanent) death had taken a big effect on her...in that she shouldn't have worried so much. The anime even touches upon it when Gohan goes into inner monologue about how Goku's death changing how she saw things. |

If you interpret the manga as saying Gotenks/Super Buu/U. Gohan are 20,000 times as strong as SSJ3 Goku, then that's where it happened, but if not, I don't think it jumped the shark really anywhere. Maybe Gero being so smart is a little improbable, but I can suspend my disbelief there; in a universe where nearly every character can blow up the Earth with ease, there's not too much that seems improbable.Hell yeah! My favorite saga and possibly my favorite villain is Kid Buu. All the other Buus are great too. Edited by IllogicalGlory, Jan 19 2013, 11:40 PM.

I really enjoy the Buu Saga too. I like it more over the Cell Saga, but Namek/Frieza Saga reigns supreme. |
